Poonawatta Estate

A tiny family estate built around a shiraz block planted in 1880 and a riesling vineyard high in the Eden Valley hills.

Poonawatta is small, serious and quietly remarkable. At its heart is "The 1880" — a shiraz block planted in 1880 and still cropping, one of the oldest continuously producing vineyards in the country. The riesling, grown higher up, is among the Eden Valley's best.

Visits are by appointment and feel like being let in on a secret. The Holt family pour with the patience of people who measure things in generations, not vintages.

If you care about old vines, this is a pilgrimage.
