Bethany
The Barossa's oldest German settlement, a single ribbon of cottages, gardens and a hilltop church tucked into the ranges above Tanunda.
Bethany holds a special place in Barossa history as the valley's first German settlement, founded in 1842 by Lutheran immigrants. Laid out in the traditional hufendorf style, with cottages strung along a single street and long garden strips behind, the tiny village retains its stone cottages, church and reserve. Surrounded by some of the region's oldest vineyards in the hills above Tanunda, Bethany is an evocative window into the Barossa's pioneering past.
