Coulthard Reserve
Broad riverside lawns beside Nuriootpa's North Para River, home to the open-air Barossa Bush Chapel and shady picnic spots.
Coulthard Reserve is Nuriootpa's riverside green room - a stretch of natural grass about the size of a sporting oval beside the North Para River, within the town's Centennial Park precinct. Big gums shade the banks, and the riverside paths fill with walkers, dogs and prams from early morning.
Its most unusual feature is the Barossa Bush Chapel, a simple open-air chapel set among the trees by the river that hosts services and ceremonies in fine weather - surely one of the prettiest places in the valley to sit still for ten minutes. The reserve takes its name from William Coulthard, the founder of Nuriootpa, whose 1855 ironstone house still stands on the main street.
The paths link into the Nuriootpa Linear Park, so you can follow the river for a proper walk before rewarding yourself nearby - Maggie Beer's Farm Eatery is only a few minutes' drive away.
