The Barossa is bordered by genuinely wild country - here's how to swap the cellar door for a walking track.
A valley with edges
It's easy to forget, between tastings, that the Barossa sits in real bushland. The hills that ring the vineyards are full of conservation parks, granite outcrops and walking trails - the perfect antidote to a long lunch and a heavy red.
Where to walk
Kaiserstuhl Conservation Park, on the eastern ridge, offers steep stringybark-forest trails and big views back over the valley. Para Wirra, to the south near Williamstown, has gentler loops, a reservoir and reliable kangaroo and echidna sightings. For something shorter, the Barossa Bushgardens showcase native plants on the edge of Nuriootpa.
Lookouts for the time-poor
If a full walk is too much, the valley's lookouts deliver the views with minimal effort. Mengler Hill is the classic, with its sculpture park; the rises around Marananga and Penrice offer quieter alternatives. Time any of them for golden hour, bring a bottle, and let the Barossa show off.
