Gomersal Wines

A relaxed, garden-fringed cellar door and restaurant on the quiet Gomersal Road, pouring honest Barossa reds well away from the tour-bus circuit.

Gomersal Wines sits on the western edge of the valley, where the vines run up against open grazing country and the traffic thins to almost nothing. The cellar door looks out over a dam and a sweep of lawn, and it is the kind of place where you can lose an afternoon without ever quite meaning to.

The wines are unfussy and well-priced — shiraz is the backbone, with grenache and a few whites rounding out the range. The on-site restaurant leans into long, slow lunches, and the setting does most of the work.

If you want the Barossa without the crowds, point the car towards Gomersal. It rewards the small detour.
