A Barossa Family Day Out

Playgrounds, pastries, a sculpture trail and a lookout — proof the Barossa works for the whole family, not just the grown-ups.

1 day Families travelling with kids who still want a taste of wine country 5 stops

The plan

Wine country and small children are not natural allies — but the Barossa is more accommodating than it looks if you plan around the under-tens. This loop strings together the bakeries, playgrounds and open-air spaces that keep kids cheerful while the grown-ups still get their cellar-door fix.

Fuel up first at the Lyndoch Bakery, where there is a garden to run in and pies for everyone. Burn off the sugar at the Tanunda Recreation Park Playground, then wander the easy, free Mengler Hill Sculpture Trail — a gallery in the open air with the valley's best view as a backdrop.

Afternoon

After lunch, stretch out along the shaded Nuriootpa Linear Park by the river — flat, pram-friendly and good for spotting kookaburras. Finish at Maggie Beer's Farm, where the lake, ducks and ice cream are as much a hit with kids as the pâté is with adults.

Keep the cellar-door visits short and the snacks frequent, and the Barossa turns out to be a fine family day.
