A Barossa Outdoors & Nature Day

Bushwalks, lookouts and birdsong away from the vines

1 day Walkers, families and birdwatchers 5 stops

It surprises first-time visitors, but the Barossa hides plenty of bush, water and walking once you leave the vine rows behind. This day links the region's best reserves and reservoirs for an active, green escape.

The plan

Start at the engineering marvel of the Whispering Wall, the curved dam that famously carries a whisper from one end to the other. Walk the native plantings at the Barossa Bushgardens, then head into the bush at Kaiserstuhl Conservation Park for the valley's signature climb and spring wildflowers. Cool off in the forested reserve around the Warren Reservoir near Williamstown, and finish among the quiet remnant scrub of Stockwell Conservation Park in the north. Pack a picnic — these are the Barossa's best lunch spots with no menu.
